Hi, I’m Halley
I’m a writer, editor, former birth worker, and a lifelong question-asker. I tell stories that explore faith, justice, and the sacred work of becoming.
Who I Am
I’m Halley — a writer, editor, and lover of honest, poignant stories. Writing is how I try to make sense of the world, and editing is how I try to help others do that too. Words help us hold space for tension, beauty, grief, and hope, often all at once.
In other seasons of life Iʼve been a registered nurse, lactation consultant, doula, midwifeʼs assistant, evangelical pastor’s wife, progressive pastoral assistant (UCC), grassroots organizer, and stay-at-home mom. Each role taught me how to sit with people through transformation–whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual.
My writing explores shape-shifting faith, religionʼs impact on society, social justice, and the questions we carry that don’t always have neat answers. I started my first blog, “Peace, Love, and Spit Up,” during early motherhood. Over time, my work grew into deeper reflections on faith, doubt, and becoming.
I live in St. Louis, Missouri with my husband Simon and our three kids, Gabriel, Phoebe, and Tabitha. I love bathtubs, bookstores, dark chocolate, coffee, daisies, rom coms, all things pregnancy and birth, and my dog, Bruno. I’m also a big enneagram nerd (if you’re curious, I’m a 4).
This space is for people who are still figuring things out, who are tired of pat answers, who seek something real. If you’re carrying a story that feels unfinished or shifting, I hope you feel welcome here.
Excellence in Writing, Editing & Storytelling
I bring honesty and heart to every story I tell. As an editor, speaker, and storyteller, I’m passionate about helping others find their voice and share stories that truly resonate.
Writing That Holds Sacred Tension
My essays explore the sacred in life’s hard places, from faith deconstruction to birth work. I tell truths that are raw, reflective, and real.
Editing with Compassion & Clarity
When I edit, I bring care and craft to every line. My goal is to help your story feel honest, grounded, and powerful.
Speaking from the Margins
Through podcasts and panels, I give voice to faith outside the usual boundaries, centered in justice, curiosity, and tenderness.
Why Work With Me?
Helping people tell honest, powerful stories is more than what I do — it’s who I am. With years of experience in both editing and holding space for transformation, I bring a unique combination of skill and insight to every project.
Smart & Intuitive Editing
I go beyond correcting grammar. I help uncover what your writing truly wants to say and make sure it comes through clearly and beautifully.
A Midwife’s Approach to Story
With a background in birth work, I believe in guiding stories with care and presence. Your voice stays yours, just stronger and more focused.
Experience Across Genres
I’ve edited fiction and non-fiction, speeches, essays, and more. Every piece is different, and I meet each one with fresh eyes.
Collaborative and Professional
You won’t get a one-size-fits-all edit. I work closely with each writer to support their goals and bring out the best in their work.
Maybe God Is a Midwife
I use the metaphor of a midwife to think about God in a new way. God is not someone who controls or fixes everything. Instead, God is a witness and a companion. A midwife does not rush birth, nor can she erase the hurt. She stays present and holds space for all the messy, beautiful, and painful moments that come with bringing something new into the world.
The idea that God can protect us from suffering falls apart pretty fast when life happens to you. Instead of the Divine having power over us, imagine the Divine holds power WITH us. My work explores the difference it would make to view God as a being who canʼt intervene, but stays close even when things are difficult.
As a former evangelical, I deeply understand the need to reimagine God. If you are here because you are struggling with your own beliefs, I see you. Letʼs hold that space together.
Ready to Tell Your Story?
Whether you’re writing a novel or simply need thoughtful edits for a cover letter, I’m here to help. Your words deserve to be heard, and I’d be honored to walk with you through the process.
